As Kazakhstan’s internet-famous national treasure, the “Golden Warriors”, arrived in Tianjin, they brought with them the bold spirit of the steppe nomads. More than 4,000 gold pieces form the dazzling armors, and every animal-patterned ornament carries a fragment of Kazakhstan’s ancient memory. And when a blue-and-white porcelain jar painted with flowers and birds from Jingdezhen, crafted during the Ming and Qing dynasties, appeared in front of Kazakhstan's visitors, its gentle glaze and elegant brushwork offered a quiet glimpse into the artistry of Chinese civilization.

“These artifacts traveled all the way from Tianjin to Kazakhstan. They’ve crossed not only geography but time — like old friends finally arriving at our doorstep,” said Karim, a local cultural enthusiast deeply fond of Chinese culture. “Through them, I felt the cultural warmth and craftsmanship of Tianjin, and I sensed the shared aesthetic and artistic understanding between our two ancient nations. Even separated by mountains and rivers, we somehow resonate.”

Civilizations flourish through exchange and grow richer through mutual learning. In 2024, the exhibition “Golden Warriors and Fertile Grassland: The Historical and Cultural Heritages Collected by National Museum of Kazakhstan” was successfully held at Tianjin Museum, helping Chinese audiences better understand the culture of Kazakhstan. In 2025, the exhibition “Imprint of Civilization: Selected Artwares of Ancient China” opened in Kazakhstan, showcasing the depth of Chinese civilization and the strong cultural ties and friendship between the two countries.

Bringing exhibitions in is ultimately to help us go out. These two-way cultural exchanges between the two countries have promoted communication and mutual understanding between civilizations and turned the Belt and Road Initiative from a broad “freehand painting” into a finely detailed “meticulous painting”. As Qiao Yue, the curator of the exhibition “Imprint of Civilization: Selected Artwares of Ancient China” and Associate Research Curator, Department of Artifact Studies, Tianjin Museum, put it: “These artifacts aren’t just static objects; they’re like time-traveling messengers connecting our two countries. Through them, we see deep resonance in aesthetics, ideals, craftsmanship, and reflections on life between the two ancient civilizations.”

At Tianjin Museum, the exhibition“Golden Warriors and Fertile Grassland” allowed locals to experience the brilliance of Central Asian steppe culture up close. A fully immersive grassland scene recreated the environment around the Issyk burial site, and digital projections brought visitors into the nomadic life deep in the grassland. Mr. Zhang, who attended with his son, said: “My kid painted a wooden horse in steppe style and then started asking about the culture of Kazakhstan. This kind of interaction means more than just looking around in the exhibition. What this exhibition brings isn’t only artifacts; it’s a cultural atmosphere that teaches us to appreciate and respect different civilizations.” Many Tianjin residents later looked up the history of Kazakhstan on their own or shared their impressions online, building a bridge of people-to-people exchange. A visitor wrote: “The Golden Warriors’ gold ornaments really show the wisdom of the steppe people. The interactive experience made me feel, in a very real way, that every civilization has its own kind of beauty — and it’s only when we respect one another that we can truly grow together.”

On the opening day of the exhibition “Imprint of Civilization” in Kazakhstan, the whole place was packed with people. Tianjin Museum’s guides even performed traditional Chinese dances to express the cultural spirit behind the artifacts, immersing visitors in the poetic charm of Chinese tradition. A local visitor, Aina, said: “The dance was stunning — as if it had stepped right out of the artifacts. I saw the poetry and romance of Chinese culture, and further my understanding of its inner beauty.” Local audience was also drawn to Tianjin’s intangible cultural heritage; the delicate strokes of Yangliuqing New Year paintings and the lifelike figures of Clay Figurine Zhang brought local visitors into a close experience of the charm of Chinese culture. A local designer said the Chinese textile and ceramic patterns inspired new ideas: “I want to combine Chinese motifs with Kazakh embroidery and turn them into everyday items to share with friends and family.” Many young visitors were inspired too, to join the Chinese language group. Kurmanbai, a first-year student from a Kazakh-Chinese language school, held up a paper-cut window decoration he made himself: “I learned to say ‘nihao’ and ‘xiexie.’ I want to learn more about China and visit someday.”

Across thousands of miles, artifacts have become “ambassadors” for cultural exchange and museums have become “meeting rooms” for mutual learning. As people from both countries engage with each other’s history and feel each other’s culture, hearts grow closer and friendship gets stronger. Through the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Kazakhstan are constantly writing new chapters of history with mutual understanding and shared cultural appreciation.(津云新闻记者/张璟 孙畅 设计制作/王舒瑶 费腾 Jinyun news reporters/ Zhang Jing, Sun Chang; Design and production/Wang Shuyao, Fei Teng)
